Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
