A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
