Social Media Content Creators Driving Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

An underground market for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Experimental Drug Acquiring Popularity Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to contact these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, administration instructions and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Vendors market the drug there before redirecting customers to other platforms for transactions.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Experts Express Worries

However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to individuals administering substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising price of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Marketing retatrutide on social media or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers attempt to circumvent the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer regulations, risking fines, legal action or prison.

Service Response and Content Removal

According to TikTok, the platform has removed problematic content and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The company stated it was committed to maintaining the service secure and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Activities

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with thousands of users, populated with images of slimming results, positive reviews and step-by-step guides for preparing or injecting at residence.

Within minutes of entering one community, a vendor shared contact information, where most purchases take place. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about body mass, health issues or previous experience.

Product Information and Pricing

Inside these communities, posts display black plastic parcels with Royal Mail labels, stating to contain new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should last, vendors give contradictory responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Actions

A representative for the messaging service stated it actively moderated dangerous material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Warnings

“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is sound, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to recent cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are using online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her staff has already encountered patients injured by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Statement

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet approved … may subject patients to possibly significant health risks”.
